Chris for a small car like a Corsa for your week it's €200. It's certainly not cheap when you compare it to about €80 for a small car from Europcar for the same week. But if you factor in the benefits I put in in my previous post you might consider it worth doing. We do. Hope that helps.

Just checked and hire is around the 200 E mark with all the benefits you explained - the wife has looked on a comparison website and found another Co (she's out now and I can't remember the name as there all very similar!) which claim to offer the same level of cover/ similar deal i.e. no card blocking, full cover inc loss of keys etc about 140 E but need to 'look into them' - probably go with you recommendation I guess
Checked Firefly (part of Hertz) but their websites a tad clunky today.

Another one to check is Costa Coches which is part British run and has a good reputation although I've never used them. http://www.costacochesrentacar.biz/

Good morning & Happy New Year,
Unfortunately it has been reported here by previous posters that certain firms at the local airports refuse to accept these and basically 'strong arm' the client into their expensive option with monies removed from their CCs. Also the usual false debits from the Cards having left Spain. Happened ...

...to my wife's eldest son and we ourselves had a 'try-on' by Europcar.
Best to make detailed enquiries from any firm when booking & keep copies of relevant e mails. Still, what do you do when you are standing at their airport desk and refused your vehicle UNLESS!!!!!!!!?????
Ask for the Complaint Book????

Hello all
lots of advice since my post
We've been to Vera area twice, we hired a car once from Almeria airport 2nd Alicante and there was no issue with the third party excess insurance.
I take your point that the funds are blocked on the credit card but I phoned the credit card company Tesco and they increased my credit limit by 1500 so I still had the original credit limit to use so it was no problem
Murcia is like that I’m glad I don’t fly there.
Would it be useful to have a star rating on the forum like a trip advisor
Normally we fly easy Jet Belfast or aer lingus Dublin- Alicante or Ryan air to Almeria
We Plan to go out for week in February with view to buying or long term rental initially

"Murcia is like that I’m glad I don’t fly there." I think you'll find car hire firms are basically the same wherever you fly into. Murcia is a good alternative to Almeria as it's only an hour and a quarter to Vera along the very empty toll road (€13.90) and quarter of an hour on to Mojacar. We find it a good airport to arrive at depending on the day we are flying as airlines are not flying into either airport every day of the week, particularly in winter.

Hello
We too got stung by taking out in the UK but we now always email firefly at Murcia direct for a quote. All insurance, waivers and additional drivers is included. You pay a fuel surcharge of about €70 but this is refunded on return of the car with a full tank. I suggest you try...

We used firefly twice prior to moving here last year no problems whatsoever and very helpful.

my advice would be that you purchase an independent policy for car hire excess
A good independent car hire excess policy it is much cheaper than even the most transparent bundle a an airport desk

Just google “car hire excess insurance ” before u leave the uk
I agree get an independent Insurance to cover Excess abroad.
we got one in the UK and it cost £39 for an Annual policy.
Really good deal.
We have always used GoldCar but never take their Super Relax Cover ( for excess ) which is to expensive.

Hi Chris,
We have always used Goldcar.
I recently had 6 days ( Fiat 500 ) for €49 and I also have an Annual UK policy to cover excess with Questor Insurance.
Have used them for last 3 years, cost £39
Thanks Howard (belated I know) - we used Goldcar and took out Ryanairs own policy excess cover - all through the RA webbie. Cost about £70 all in for a week, booked a Fiat 500 but were upgraded to a Fiat People Carrier, all good.
They took a swipe on the card but got a quick/ full refund on the return with a full tank of Diesel - staff all great too
Used the toll on the way into Bedar but the wife's sat nav (iphone) took us the non-toll route back - all good as we saw more of the real Spain on the smaller roads I think - BTW filled up and the gas station was NOT self service, a nice lady filled up for us, yet another blast from the 60/70's England I grew up in.....
Many thanks again to everyone
