I am looking for a home in the Arboleas region. In a striking number of advertisements I see that the veranda is completely shielded with a kind of mesh, mosquito net. Are there so many problems with small flying pests?

With respect this question has been asked and answered many times over.  Flies, and wasps as well as other flying insects are a problem, particularly in the daylight hours and also they are attracted by light after the sun goes down.  Arboleas and many of the villages around are agricultural areas, there are also farms that have livestock, so often there are quite a lot of flies.  Some people aren't bothered by them, others prefer to enjoy the outside lifestyle without them.

It used to be mainly foreign residents who opted for Florida style screening but now lots of Spaniards like the lack of bugs.

That's the primary reason for screening.  I've lived in both the countryside and also near the sea.  In the countryside I had screening by the sea I can't get it installed because in my present location it wouldn't work.  I'd have it in a heartbeat to keep out the flies and more importantly the mozzies who seem very enamoured with me😢

Having experienced flies staying opposite an orange grove within a golf resort.... never again! It drove us mental  as we had never experienced so many annoying flies! Quite frankly it spoiled the holiday as we couldn't be outside and sunbathe let alone dare to eat!

Our property priority was therefore the below:

1. Finding a property not too rural with lots of food/animal farming nearby.

2. Not near large water deposits. (I get eaten alive!)

3. Avoiding areas where nets are as this clearly indicates an issue for sure.

4. Properties showing photos with fly strips hanging inside.

This criteria therefore narrowed down our field very much when looking alongside google view searches. Then again I have a very low tolerance of flies and also I don't want to have to sit inside a net frame!

I would say just be careful where you are buying as Almeria has lots  of very agricultural areas. Research is key as with any property buy.. We had read numerous posts about Albox and Alboleas having fly issues so we just didn’t even consider those areas although we saw some lovely properties on websites. However we do not have first hand experience and of course  everyone has different tolerance levels of what they think is ok.
