Hi Susi

Thanks for your reply, its not that were looking for little britain but more a case of having a few expats who should we need to,could go to for help as much as the thought of living in a spanish village appeals to us having the knowladge that there is someone who we could go to for support would ...

...be a great comfort to my wife and as for buying a house that would be after we had spent a year renting to make sure its for us

Albox is the place for support from other ex pats with lots of knowledge ie the Group of Friends who are fantastic for help and advice and run a great library of english books with Spanish lessons and coach trips for anyone who wants them

Hi walchell and thanks for your reply.  I fully understand the wish, especially in the early days of residing in another country, to be near fellow immigrants; in the Albox/Arboleas area you will certainly get that! It is a very sensible idea to try renting first as you will indeed find that there are areas where it is very definitely "Little Britain in the sun".  In places with a  high immigrant population people can tend to become lax about learning or trying to communicate in the native tongue of the country they reside in. Whilst this may not seem to be a problem at first, it can very soon become one when visits to the doctor, town hall, electricity, water or gas supplier are necessary and one ends up having to pay out for translators. It will also affect your dealings with local tradespeople ( for example builders, should you decide to buy and need improvement or renovation work done on your property) when a lack of knowledge or basic facility with the native  language, or even with contacts within the world outside your own immigrant group, will inevitably limit your choices.  I'm sure you will bear these caveats in mind and I wish you all the best with your future plans.

From my own experience you can’t turn round without bumping into a Brit. Lots of British owned bars and businesses. Saying that I’ve used a lot of Spanish tradesmen for stuff I’ve needed doing and have been very happy with them. I love the area. We initially were looking at buying nearer th...

...e coast but the cost quadruples. I can count on one finger the bad experiences. If you have to deal with Galasa in Vera, if your Spanish isn’t great, take an interpreter. If you try to speak with them in their own language they will more than help you. When we have a fancy for a day at the coast, it’s 35 minutes

What British owned bars? I can’t think of any. Who in UK knows what a Galasa is? Precision of speech is essential for a would-be newbe! To be put on the right path to residency.

If you're thinking of coming to live here it's up to you to find out what Galasa is etc. Not wanting to be rude but this is Spain.

Well the Bar Trinidad is 5 minutes walk from us. Pretty sure Bev an Trev are British, what with Trev’s cockney accent and all. Galasa? Did I spell it wrong? The water supply company.  Are you a member of the grammar police?

Thanks again for replying and yes its true the need to learn Spanish is a must my Spanish is ok but no where near good enough to tackle the utilities companies  so lessons are really important.

Was just going to say about ENGLISH OWENED bars. Being the first English person to live in Arboleas I think I must have tryed every bar here.

To answer the original question. I do not think i am qualified to answer having only lived here 32 years.
