We drive over from UK andcstay around 6-9 months and get our English registered car insured with Abbeygate.  Fantastic!!  

I am with Abbeygate and they refused as i have Residencia.

How do you manage to stay 6 - 9 months without Residencia??

Abbeygate has previously insured a Spanish reg. car for me, my English reg car and then the same car a few years later once Spanish registered. I can't recall them ever asking if I had residencia.

With all the hassle you may be having, the suggestion that you use one of the removal services seems like a good idea to me.

P.S Do you have a Spanish/English reg vehicle in Spain right now ?
