We are considering returning to Britain and my first thought was buy a van in Britain and drive down load and drive back to Britain but because i am a resident i cannot get British insurance is there a Spanish company that will insure a British registered van.

Thank you

when you take in van purchase ferries/fuel etc

I stand to correction, but most Spanish insurance companies won’t insure a vehicle not matriculated to Spanish plates - there may be one - but I am not aware of it

Can I ask I question of you knowledgable people out there. If the UK plated Vehicle's UK MOT has run out, how do you get around that??? If one of the companies mentioned above will insure it, do they not need an MOT certificate>>

Thanks  Jenni

Ah. Now there you have a problem, because if MOT has expired, it cannot be driven on a road ergo cannot be insured.

You could argue that that applies only to British roads but I’m pretty certain you’d find that any vehicle used on European roads must be in compliance with the laws of the registering country; so not having insurance would only be a small part of the problem - your vehicle would not be able to be driven on any road.

As stated by Dario, you cannot insure a car without a valid MOT; therefore logical to assume those with U.K. plated cars must return at least annually to the U.K.

Another point of interest: I had my car ITV’d with U.K. plates as part of the process of matriculation, however, in order to do this I had to have another document provided by the main dealer ‘Technical ...?’ which was used to inspect my car. This was a requirement in order to gain an ITV and thus register the car in Spain

Ficha Técnica I believe - this is the technical specification of your car as supplied by the manufacturer.  A car ITVd in Spain may not deviate from this specification in any way, which means that the modified cars that are allowed in UK, i.e. lowered suspension, bigger wheels, body kits, modified engines etc etc would not get through an ITV here.  Modified cars CAN obtain an ITV, but I am advised it’s an expensive process akin to matriculating a car again and requiring engineers reports etc.

It is why I guess, you see very very very few modified cars here .....
