We moved here six years ago with our 4 year old Retriever. In his first two years in the UK he needed operations (intestinal blockages) that cost £8000 so we were glad to have Pet Plan insurance, which cost us £25 month when we began but by the time we left for Spain had gone up to £75 a month. So that was £900 a year!
We were advised that vet fees were far less in Spain and that pet insurance here is not a thing. And so it proved to be. Fortunately he has not needed any surgery but he has needed occasional investigations and treatment (including ultrasound, antibiotics etc) but in the last 6 years it’s doubtful that we have spent in total more than €500. Obviously standard protective treatment such as leishmaniasis, annual boosters, flea and tick treatment, worming, and rabies jabs are additional expenses - but again, much cheaper here in Spain.
So - he might at any time need a major op, (cross fingers) but it would not be the small fortune that it is in the UK.
