We are looking to move to Spain however we have a large long haired German shepherd and a ragamiese cat, we’re not sure if either would be ok with the heat, has anyone taken pets to Spain from here. They are 9&4

Morning Elsie
We have a Bichon Frise and he copes fine with the weather. If at home he tends to favour the shade either inside condo or under table or chairs on terrace. Similarly if we go out to a bar or restaurant with him we have to sit outside and he’ll be in shade. We always keep water and a small bowl in the car so we can “top him up” regularly.
On our condo complex in Vera Playa there are a number of other dogs and cats which also seem to cope OK.
Hope that helps.
Ian

Hi, when I moved to Spain (many years ago) I bought with me 2 pondengo's , one of them had a heart problem, but had him checked by vet before we left and again when we arrived they both gave him the all clear, 3 weeks later he had a heart attack and sadly died. His brother was fine and lived for many years. We moved here in September, which happened to be the hottest September for many years.
So my advice would be, to move here between the months of October - April, this then gives the dog and cat time to acclimatise to the heat gently. Avoid May June July Aug Sept at all costs.
I now have 9 dogs and 9 cats they are all Spanish rescues and are fine, they find their own shade. Hope this helps Jenni
Hi Jenny

It is now thought that a dog's coat can insulate against the heat as well as the cold. It is necessary, however, to make sure the undercoat is groomed out as that will not move to regulate their temperature . I imagine the same is true of cats.
Providing a child's paddling pool for them to cool their feet or even lie in can be very useful.
I know some catteries soak towels in cold water for cats to shelter under.

We drove here a year ago with our golden retriever - who sheds a lot of fur. With tiled floors no need to vacuum any more but he does have to be watched carefully as he loves sunbathing on the terraza so we have to gently remind him to seek out the shade. We also have a paddling pool (just for him) and a chill coat.
We walk him in the early morning 9am and at 6pm to avoid the summer heat. Always carry water but several cafe/bars do bring out a bowl of water for dogs. Be aware of two main issues: leishmaniasis injections are essential, and beware of processionary caterpillars. Also, large dogs by law must always be on the lead.
Good luck, your dog will be fine!
Thank you so much for your information, can I ask what the injection is for and do I have that done before or when I get there x

We have two large dogs. One is a short haired pointer and the other a long haired Labrador.I agree that you should definitely come over before it's warm so maybe March or April at the latest .Get all your vaccines at your vets before hand ,wormed etc. When you are here as well as their normal vaccines ,they get a rabies injection every year. Also for our dogs here the frontline is not enough so they have flea collars that last 8 months on.
The Labrador who was never shaved in Ireland is shaved 3/4 times a year as she can't take the heat otherwise. We keep them in the shade anytime it's hot.If we go out and it's a warm day we draw the curtains in the sitting room so they don't over heat. When we walk them we always carry water with us.
On the positive side our dogs have all lived longer here ,one died at 16 and another at 15.
Vets are much cheaper than Ireland and are really good.Good luck in your move .

Morning,
Can I just add to the above post that instead of Leishmania injections, your dog should wear a collar Called Seresto bought at the vets to protect him.
