Invitation letter to enter Spain

I am concerned about the invitation to stay with friends in their holiday home in Spain.
Do they really check on entry that you have the carte de invitation.

Unless you are a person who needs a Schengen visa, then the Carte de Invitación is not necessary. UK Passport holders have a visa exemption and so again the Carte is not needed.
