Hi All,
We are hoping to purchase a property in Vera Playa early next year.
I have been reading posts on here and getting some good information.
The properties we are looking at and considering do not have fly screens fitted.
Is there problem with flies in this general area in the summer ?
I would have thought most properties would have fly screens fitted, but it they are not required that's good.
Cheers
Martin

We don’t live in that area but are there most days , don’t think I’ve ever seen a fly there , I’m pretty sure you will find it’s mostly inland , we were in almanzora right on top of a hill , no where near farms and they drove us insane. Every time you take a bite of your food there on ya lips , in your mouth , most days we just gave up and went inside to eat , which is not what we came here for.
Since living there we have purchased an apartment in palomares where there’s the odd day when they seem to be a pest but nothing like we suffered before, we have also lived in mojacer with little problem and now settled in turre with zero problems.
1. Flies are not a problem in the area. However, you'll have warmer a warmer climate and therefore more flies than say in the UK. The flooding some weeks ago caused an increase in the fly population, but is dissipating daily since.
2. If you have money to spare it is not expensive to have fly screens fitted. You can get DIY kits locally if you wish. However, I believe it is not worth the effort. But, don't let me dictate what you should or shouldn't do.
3. I wouldn't leave flies interfere with any decision to buy or not to buy property.
Oh! Welcome to Spain and I hope you have a long and happy relationship with the new way of life.

I agree with the previous writer Matthew,. Of course there are flies but I've lived here 20 years in Vera Playa haven't got fly screens but do have a beaded curtain on the back door but don't leave the door open anyway! You'll get more in the pueblo Laguna area because of the 'lake' but not enough to put people off from coming to this beautiful area. You'll certainly get more flies etc Inland. Good luck.

Hi Lyn77
Thanks for your reply.
The restaurants in that particular area seem to get some good reviews,
I have not read any reviews where people are complaining about eating outside and being bothered by flies etc.
Which is a good sign.
It appears we will not be needing fly screens :-)
Vera playa no fly problem, our Son had a property there for 14yrs so a nice place to live.
Anywhere inland say, 20/30 mins means higher up, so windy, colder and flys would live that far in land

We have had an apartment in Vera Playa for 12 years and don't see many flies at all we eat out everywhere you might just get the odd one but we haven't experienced many to complain about it's very refreshing to be able to eat outside all the time.
Good luck and enjoy !

That's exactly what i wanted to hear Tracy.
We all come to the sun and visualise eating out on your terrace or in Chiringuito's etc
Enjoying the outdoor life and not being shut indoors.
Cheers All

Sorry to give a negative opinion after all the positive ones but, we have lived 5 minutes from Vera & Palomares since June and this summer during the melon harvest the flies were beyond horrendous. During the harvest and for a 3 month period following the harvest the flies continued at the same level because all the damaged or rejected melons are left in the field to rot and the flies love em. They then plough the rotted fruit into the ground and cover it in pig poo fertilizer and then the flies start again.
The closer you live to the sea the less flies you will get but 5-10 minutes inland it can be very different
