We plan to become resident in the general Velez Rubio area later this year and are under retirement age, which I understand means that we need to make private health arrangements.  Does anyone have any experience of good or bad providers, or tips in general?  I imagine that we will also need to sign up with a local doctor and dentist - again, does anyone have any recommendations?

Hi, well Dentist, like UK is pay for service although you will find generally that they are less expensive and not so rushed as UK. Still there are those who have 'turned on' to expats and declare they have to make you ' dentally fit' even where this entails replacing healthy fillings. So as it's a fee for service system just shop around for estimates. A friend was quoted 2000€ for work our dentist did for 300€. Sorry not near you!!!!

While you are getting all your paperwork sorted you can use your EHICs so make sure you have them. GPs will happily treat for 3-6 months on EHIC or longer & some have used for years. In an emergency the A&E Dept (Urjencias) of the local hospital with your EHIC & Passport. If uou are on medication then bring some.with you and you will be amazed at what the pharmacist will sell OTC. It's often cheaper to buy than to go to the inconvenience of a GP appointment.

You will need an Interpreter unless.you can muddle by with Google Translate. Usually 10€/hr.The English Freepress out here have adverts for Medical Insurance Companies and of course the ?is existing Medical conditions. Better to leave this decision until you are here or look online.

Lastly Medical notes from GP. Generally an expensive non-necessary as most Drs.here don't speak or read English. If you are under an NHS Consultant then ring the Medical Secretary and ask for copies of letters to the GP. These should be free!!!

Think that's it. Any specific questions pls feel free to ask. Hope you like the cold & snow.

Thanks Bob.  I'm not enjoying the cold and snow in England today!

I was actually meaning Velez which is similarly gifted most winters. Wife flying out from Manchester on Saturday so fingers crossed.

Best wishes for your Spanish adventure. We have been here for 13 years and apart from cheating Brits have loved it.

Belated Happy New Year,

Bob

I thought you probably did!  Whilst we haven't lived right through a Velez winter yet, we have visited, so I am reasonably happy that although we may need an extra log on the fire, it shouldn't be too troubling.  Of course it is lovely to be able to sleep comfortably at night in the summer whilst the Mojacar hordes swelter... ;-)

Best wishes

Paul

Thats why we have the 2 properties. 1 in Mojacar & a mountain cottage outside Puerto Lumbreras. The summer is only troublesome in regard to the hoards of tourists, the noise, lack of parking, etc. But for the winter it's Mojacar. Even then a gas fire is needed for a few hours a night.

Gratefully we also have India, Australia & UK. Sandra considers Spain home; me it's wherever we unpack or park the motorhome. Bit like being back in the Army.
