Hi Dario

I am for the first time - really new to all this, renting an apartment in Roquetas.  I have just started renting the apartment in January and for this year anyway need to go back and forward to see how things go etc,  also for medical, dental treatments.  I have a rental contract for one year.  I was hoping to enquire about opening a  non-resident bank account at least to pay my utility bills.  I plan to pay the rent 3 months in advance which I can do in person when I am in Roquetas, however, the utility bills arrive every month as far as I know, so I have paid the first one by bank transfer which proved to be quite expensive as the recipient's bank took quite a bit in transfer charges so therefore my payment which I thought would cover my bill was short.  The letting agency were quite ok about this and said that they would add the shortfall to my next utility bill.   I wanted an NIE to start me off with a  bank account and then eventually I would hope to apply for residency. I did enquire in 2 banks and they both wanted an NIE - Cajamar and Caxia - none of the bank people that I spoke had any English and I had not made an appointment. I do have an Irish and a UK passport.

So I am sort of learning as I go along, so to speak.

KATHY

Good morning Kathy,

Well as per my post a couple back, I’m not certain Extranjeria will grant a NIE just to open a bank account - there’s no imminent major purchase.

NOW I know for certain that Sabadell does NOT require a NIE - I opened my account with them in 2014 with a passport.  If you keep deposits totaling  700,00€ a month going into the account they will give you the fee-free Expansión account.  This is totally 100% fee free - no card charges, transfer charges - nothing.  It’s also unusual to be hit with fees from the recipients bank - that’s the recipients problem, not yours.

Given your situation, my advice, for what it’s worth, will be to pursue residency - especially in light of you having signed a years contract and going past March 29th.  You don’t want to come here, then head off back to UK and on returning here suddenly find that you can’t re-Enter the country for another 5 or 6 months

Hi Kathy

I agree with Dario re Sabadell. I have an expansion account which I opened from the UK without an NIE Number. I am with the branch in Vera. Everything Dario says regarding regular deposits and fees are correct.

Kind Regards

Kathy, I opened a non-residents bank account in Cajamar Turre, with no problems at all, just passport and Padron paperwork from Ayumento Town Hall. For the same reasons that you do. Mind you, I pay all of my bills by Transferwise to Spanish accounts from my UK account.

Just checked the copy of the invoice that the recipient sent to me, Bankinter charged 12,00 euros on a 39,44 transfer. I wonder if they charge a percentage of the transfer amount or is the standard fee 12,00 euros no mater how much is transferred.

So the recipients bank charged the recipient 12,00 € and you got stuck with it?
