Hi. We are thinking of moving to southern Spain  ( not decided on an area yet although we do own a holiday home in Roquetas)

I have an Irish passport living in the UK. My wife has an English passport.

I am a qualified plumber, gas fitter but mainly I fit wood burning stoves and sweep chimneys. I would most likely just want to sweep chimneys to be honest,  my wife is a medical secretary.

We are learning Spanish but finding it hard ( my wife is better than me). Can anybody tell me if there is much work available for chimney sweeps

chimney sweeps are hard to find in the Almeria area so could be a good occupation to look at not sure what red tape you will encounter though, insurance springs to mind straight away.  your wife can get residencia under your Irish passport but again find out what you have to do.  Keep up with the Spanish always a good thing to have under your belt.

Thanks for your reply. It's much appreciated. I will look into the rules and regulations, I'm sure the red tape can't be any worse than here in the uk regarding qualifications and insurance.

 Hi

I've been through this "residency" process three times.

My mother in Law - I did everything myself and it was hell on earth.

My wife - We got a local lawyer and the process was a piece of cake.

ME - The lawyer failed because of Brexit. So I had to do it myself. My first application failed and I appealed with the help of the "Oficina de Extranjería". Sweet success !!!!

The wife and mother are Danish so EU like you. As long as you have financial security, it won't be a problem and you have six months to establish that.

Your wife is British (like me) and therefore non EU. Her application will have to establish a place to live, medical insurance and financial income of around 10,000 euros a year before tax between the both.

I'll say this: GET A Lawyer

But if you want to go through the process yourself, PM me.

Hi. Thanks for your reply. It's nice to know people are willing to help and advise complete strangers. Our situation is that we would have an income from the uk of about £20k a year, plus savings. We would stay at our apartment in Roquetas until we found a suitable home for us to live in, then we would rent out our apartment. I understand that we would have to pay tax in Spain on our UK income, If needed I would work part time in Spain. We have a brilliant Spanish Lawyer who speaks English ( and German ). I'm not worried about the process of moving to Spain, its more the fact that I don't know if there are any governing bodies in Spain regarding chimney sweeping and wood burner installations. In the UK they are very regulated.

Many thanks Mike
