My wife had a letter from her ENT in Australia detailing the issues and the procedures she’d had.  She had it translated and presented that and it certainly smoothed the way.  I’d say if you can bring medical records with you, it will certainly be beneficial

The UK has never trained enough doctors to meet the needs of the NHS. Last year, of the 12,771 new doctors registered by the General Medical Council, 44 per cent qualified abroad: 17 per cent from other countries in the European Economic Area and 27 per cent in countries outside the EEA.

Doctor shortage sees new recruitment drive in IndiaBy Michael BuchananBBC News, Radio 4's The World At One
Mmh! Not all rosy.

Hi, there is a very good reason for the fact that we have a lot of foreign doctors joining the UK wide NHS.  The government have systematically changed terms and conditions for doctors and therefore a lot of senior doctors coming up to retirement age have had enough and want to retire early. At the same time, young doctors don’t want to work under the new GP conditions and are either working without becoming practice partners or leaving the UK for Australia, Canada, New Zealand. There’s a ticking time bomb in that in a couple of years the UK will be unable to recruit doctors unless they look abroad.  Yes, politicians are basically at fault here but we can’t grow new British GPs in the time we have left, as it takes 7 years I think, so we must secure people that don’t have English as a first language to bridge the gap.  It doesn’t necessarily mean that getting foreign doctors degrades their medical performance, and it’s a great subject for the press to beat up politicians over.  True, Jeremy Hunt had a lot to answer for before he moved on, but the press do continue to publish articles that are highly edited and don’t always provide the full picture.

Just saying! :-)

Warm regards,

Chrissie

Try and get your medical records if you want them yourself before you leave the UK.

I found it almost impossible from Spain.

However it is almost unlikely a Spanish Doctor will want your records. They simply do not trust, they will carry out their own diagnosis blood tests etc.

They take interest on any background information you may care to disclose.

The tests we had on our first appointment were very thorough, carefully explained in detail during diagnosis and then we were given copies to keep.

For my Wife the Doctor did not agree with the prescribed medication she bought with her from the UK (from  a Doctor of 45 years) After his diagnosis he chose a different outcome. The improvement was immediate and within a few months she was able to be weaned off them. She is now leading a normal healthy life.

Perhaps some help was also the Spanish climate, but her total dependency has gone.

Hope this personal explanation may help you.
