It's not an error it's just some hire car companies pulling a fast one.  However £5.50 or be at the mercy of the hire car company.  Know which I would choose.

100% agree.  If anyone can confirm which IDP they apply for (number) that would be useful.

While I still had a UK licence, I also had an International Driving Permit. If you are driving solely within Spain you will need the 1949 version which is tagged 09/2018 on back cover. If you are driving from UK to Spain via a third country you will need other versions too. I found the Post Office very helpful as to which version I needed. Hire car or own car, if you are driving with just a UK licence and get stopped by the Guardia they will want to see your IDP too.

For the sake of a quick trip to the post office, a passport photo and £5.50 you may as well get one - my one expired last year from working in the UAE so will get one before we return in October just in case.

its would be best i would say, i am here full time so have a Spanish licence , and if i go back to the the UK i will simply get taxis

easiest option for me as i have been here 5 years and am used to the RH driving on the roads if i was in the UK i would make mistakes no doubt

Hello,

Having returned from a great three weeks at our apartment (first time in 12 months) I just had a word of advice for everyone looking to hire a car.

I'm usually a stickler for checking all the details of a trip but must have been distracted this time by all the additional requirements.  On picking up my hire car it was brought to my attention that my driving license was now a UK license and since I renewed (change of address in UK) it does indeed only contain the Union flag.   The EU flag has been removed, makes sense, complete oversight by me which cost me £300 on picking up my car.

The hire clearly stated in their regs that if I did not hold an EU/International driving licence I would have to pay an additional insurance/levy and would not be allowed to carry on with my own annual car hire policy/excess process.  My UK driving license is no longer recognised.

Whatever peoples views on this (it doesn't matter) please check your driving licence before travelling when hiring a car.  Applying for an annual international driving license from your post office is cheap, easy and quick...yes a pain in the arse and something we previously never had to worry about, how long will that list get.

Just a reminder to add this to your list in the future so you don't get caught out like me.

Hope many of you are getting to enjoy your holiday homes this summer and those permanently in Spain are enjoying your growing freedoms. Stay well everyone.

Well my daughter hired a car from malaga airport and only had a British licence .. but like you I have both a international one ( from post office 6 pounds a year ) best to be safe than sorry …

This highlights there is no sure way.  Some hire companies are, some aren't...best bet as you say, get an IDP from the PO.

I contacted my hire company and questioned their 'scare' tactics over me being illegal without an IDP.  They've offered no defence other than it's part of their T&C's and they can be whatever they want them to be...within reason (paraphrasing).

Afraid that the eu is only going to make things more difficult for U.K. nationals as time passes. Their way of saying that “you voted Brexit well here it is” , not going to be easy.
