Hello

My husband and I have British driving licences.  We reside in the UK .  I have Spanish nationality and DNI as well as a passport.  We want to buy a car to use it when we are here (3 months at a time, twice a year).

Will we be able to get car insurance in Almeria?

Hi Fali45

I don't imagine you would have a big problem getting car insurance for a Spanish registered car in Spain. More than likely you'll be required take out a 12 month policy, even though you won't be in the country for all that time.

If you have a Spanish bank account, or are a member  of a motoring organisation such as R.A.C.E., they are likely to be able offer you a deal with bells and whistles such as break down service or no claim protection.

It is likely that one of you will need to obtain a Spanish driving license (if you don't have it already) to be legally allowed drive your own Spanish registered car.

You could save yourself quite  a bit of bother by renting or leasing a car for the time you are in Spain. There are great deals to be had especially in the off season.

You won't have to worry about breakdown recovery, insurance, driving licence etc., and the cost will compare favourably to the depreciation of your own car standing in Spain unattended for 6 months of the year.

Good luck

Couple of corrections:

1.  All Spanish insurance by law comes with breakdown cover included (be sure to check limit of cover from home - most companies will only offer free recovery up to 120 km from home address - however both Linea Directa and MAPFRE give unlimited mileage)

2.  It is not necessary to have a Spanish carnet de conducir to own or drive a Spanish registered car here, unless you are permanently resident in the country.

Thanks Dario.  Was just going to add the same info.  I'm just sad it doesn't work in reverse just shelled out over £500 to insure a fiesta in the UK, all because I changed my English plastic for the Spanish variety ☹️☹️☹️

Insurance prices in UK are frightening - especially when you consider all that comes with Spanish insurance

  • Breakdown cover
  • Courtesy car in event yours is off the road; no limit on usage, yours until your car is fixed or assessed as written off.
  • Recovery from anywhere in Spain to home address or garage of choice.
  • Legal cover to assist with traffic-related fines / summonses
  • Windscreen cover
  • Headlight cover
And this for 325€ a year with Linea Directa, for a 2005 2.0 litre HDi Peugeot 407

Forgot to mention that I can only drive my car and not anyone else's.  Shameful, but insurance is just legalised theft!🙄🙄🙄

I think the problem is that in UK it is the person that is insured for a particular vehicle, whilst here it is the vehicle itself that is insured, meaning anyone with your permission can drive it and be insured without being named on the policy (as long as they are above age 24)

Rubbish...I had a Mustang me My chum be smashed it up I was insured by Ibex, they said most cars it is the car and not the person but yours is a specialist car and is exempt.Dont touch any companies like Ibex or Abbeygate, they are based in the likes of Gibraltar and don't have to abide by Spanish legislation.Cost me £15000 to repair the Mustang 😡😡😡
