If you do go the UK Sim route, couple of things to watch out for

Roaming charges - make sure you go with a provider who doesn’t levy roaming chargesWhat network will the provider you’ve chosen roam on in Spain?  No point getting a SIM that has no roaming partners, or roams on one of the networks here with patchy coverageWhat’s the purpose of the SIM...

...? If you need it for emergencies only, probably fine - but if you are needing it to receive SMSs / Messages from any organisation in Spain, be aware that some organizations don’t accept a non-Spanish number.

It is for emergencies only, eg:I don't want to leave my phone with all my info on the beach while in the sea etc.

I would prefer a spanish number for the reason you state, always handy for companies etc. getting in touch.

Thanks again for everyone's advice.

A problem we had with PAYG, both UK based and Spanish based was that if not used fairly regularly they would cut you off, you lose your number, AND they’d keep the money held on it.

Masmovil did that to us even though the phone was used every couple of weeks or so.

Years ago you could keep such a phone in the car for emergencies etc. The providers we had gave no notice at all like an SMS or email to let you know. Thus, when you want it for that emergency, you’d find a dead phone.

I've been looking at lycamobile, they do one for €5 for 28 days, no contract so that might be OK for what I want 🤞

Who are they carried by? Ideally you’d want a supplier carried by Movistar as they have the biggest network throughout Spain

FYI Digi do similar, 5€ per month for 6GB data and 100 minutes national and international calls, no contract.

Not sure, I may be interested in the €3 digi on your link, as it's purely for emergency use.

I don't use anywhere near my allowances on my UK phone so don't need any more, thanks for the info Dario.

My husband has a pay as you go Mas Movil  phone.  He just bought an unlocked phone and bought a Mas Movil SIM card and tops it up on via an ATM.

Hi,  I'm looking for a pay and go sim with no contract or monthly payment but they don't seem to be available here.

I only need it for emergencies. Can anyone help?

Hi my husband has a Masmovil sim which you can top up for as little as 5euros. Has no time limit, same as Uk top up as you need it. Also can be done online.

Hope this helps

Hi Nelngaz

I'm coming late to this.

Consider downloading Skype to your phone or computer, if you haven't already done so.  You can get a Spanish number, which is what the person answering will see with caller display on their phone.

You download credit starting at €5.  Calls to most European landlines are about 2 - 3c per minute and to mobiles around 12 - 15c.  As far as I can see there is no expiry date on Skype credit.  You can call any landline or mobile number on earth.

I find Skype very convenient when making calls to people and businesses which are not on my contacts.

The same Skype account can be used on any mobile devices, as well as a laptop or PC.  (Of course, you'll need a wifi or broadband connection to make use of Skype).
