Hi Chris n Jan,
We're hoping to do similar this October. So long as NLV goes okay.
We're driving from lincoln, staying overnight in a pet friendly hotel in Plymouth.
Then sailing from Plymouth to Santander as opposed to Portsmouth to Santander, purely because it's only 1 x night instead of 2 on the ferry and less stressful for the dogs of which we also have 2.
Paula, my wife, booked a pet cabin for us and the 2 x Shih Tzu's. Think it was Approx £500 odd, but that was for a Ford Galaxy with roof box plus the pet cabin.
Once at Santander We're driving to the outskirts of Madrid, where we're staying overnight at hotel Mira Sierra, which is pet friendly (will take 2 x small dogs, as we asked if this was possible on the phone).
The following morning we're driving to La Alfoquia, think it's 9 hrs in total (with plenty of stops along the way).
The dogs need to be microchipped, also need a animal health certificate, which is issued up to 10 x days before travel plus a rabies injection, minimum 3 wks before travel. All other Injections need to be up to date too.
Ferry needs to be booked well in advance if you want a pet cabin. They also have kennels and a small exercise area on board. We are using Brittany Ferries. If you ask for a code on the forum you can get 5% discount when booking.
Hope all goes well with your trip. Look at it as if it's a big adventure.
Good luck and kind regards,
Chris & Paula
