Hi, we have just come back from a holiday in Roquetas de Mar and experienced a real problem with being plagued by flies, mainly at meal times.  They were flying round our mouths, landing in our wine, sitting on our food, it was a nightmare; other members suggested it could be the near by covered fruit farms causing the flies. We are planning to move out to the Huercal-Overa/Albox area towards the end of next year, please could anyone living out there let us know if you experience fly problems and if so, is it all year or just certain months of the year. Thank you.

Hi,

It will be worse inland. Huercal Overa can be really bad as there are a lot of pig farms I need the area. Usually at the coast it is better. If you are looking aproperties, factor in the cost of a fly screen area outside, where you can eat and sunbathe.

As for times of the year, because of our climate they can be all year round.

Thanks Jack, that's exactly what we didn't want to hear, but appreciate your response.  We will now look further afield for a house.

Really sorry, but that is the reality of it.

I remember we were at the hospital in HO one day and just getting into the car and fighting then off was a struggle. I a man not exaggerating. I know it's something we have to put up with in a hot country but I suggest search as close to the coast as you can.

Good luck in your house hunt and future life in Spain.

Sorry to hear that you had a bad holiday experience with flies in Roquetas. Was it in a specific place, was it near the beach, etc? Many of the plastico agri greenhouses are not in active use at this time of year so it’s unlikely to be flies from there - and they are covered.

I’m genuinely puzzled as we live in the Roquetas Urba, about 10 mins walk from the coast and have been here a year. Yes there are some flies about in the summer but we have not had your difficult experience. In fact we get fewer wasps here than we did in England!

Hope you find a place, we are aware that pig farms inland are places to avoid because of the plagues of flies.

Hi Chrisso, Well we only ate out on the coast of Roquetas and Almerimar, this is where we had the problem.  Whilst driving from one town to the other, the sat nav takes you through the plasticos and there were flies galore!  In fact we had to slow down to avoid the swallows which were swooping down to eat them!  This is why we thought we had better check if it was a problem in land too as we only stopped for coffee in Huercal-Overa and there were a few flies round then, but as we didn't have a meal, we didn't know if it was as bad as on the coast.  Maybe it's the abundance of people in the tourist areas adding to the problem, open bins with ice cream wrappers etc etc.  Any way apparently in-land is worse because of the pig-farms so it looks like Almeria is out for us, unfortunately.

Thanks all for your comments.

Please do not discount Almeria. I have lived in Arboleas since 92 and the fly problem becomes less every year. Arboleas town hall does not give permissions for intensive animal farming and so unlike Albox and Huercal-Overa the problem with fly's is not as great.

From my experience living in the countryside in the Sorbas area, there isn't anything like that problem you describe.  If you had that problem near plastic greenhouses it must be that they left tomatoes etc in piles to rot.  They do this sometimes when the wholesale price is too low in order to not have a glut of produce which lowers the prices and the stuff isn't worth the wages paid to the workers.

In the countryside you must accept a certain quantity of flies when there is livestock nearby.  Try and find out if there are pig farms or goat pens within a kilometer or so.  Normally if you go inland the winters are colder and flies die off and some parts of Almeria do get very cold and also have snow.

We are in Serena near Bedar. 17 years.  Not near goats , no pigs here. We use our place on and off Oct through to June and flies are never a problem if fact no more than in U.K.  This is heaven so don’t just dismiss Almeria just be careful where you look.
