Hello

Having taken our dogs to the vets this morning for their yearly injection the vet mentioned she thought we could get a pet passport in Spain if you have a property in Spain. She gave the impression this would bypass having to have the health checks each visit. Is this correct?  ( I thought we couldn't due to being in the UK and with our Brexit). Feeling confused! If this is possible does anyone know of Vets that could do this for us near to Mojacar and that you could recommend. Thank you

She was correct. It’s about €12 for a pet passport here. So each time you travel back to U.K. with it you will need to ensure the rabies jab is still valid (within last year of travel) and that worming has been carried out by your vet within 5 days before crossing border into UK (the latter is a British, not EU requirement)

Thank you, most helpful.

Do you know if there is a criteria to get a passport? ( we are thinking of  doing the up to maximum 90 days criteria).

When we got our Spanish pet passport we were stuck in Covid lockdown so stayed longer than 90 days and got residency under the withdrawal agreement. Since then weve done Mar-May and Sep-Nov. On the pet passport my id is my spanish NIE number, however if you give them a ring they will clarify things for you, (maybe use your Passport number). It cost me a bit more than 12 euro because they registered my dogs chip in Spain on the lost/stolen register. Therefore depending which country we were in, if the worst were to happen we would be contacted regardless.

As I said give them a ring, they are really helpful and knowledgable.

If you do get a Spanish pet passport your pet need the rabies vaccine annually.

Thank you for your reply, the NIE number makes sense as a criteria. I will explore further when we have exchanged and got the property secured as to not jinx things!

Hi yes we have  had a pet passport from our vet in SJDLT for the past two years and no problems  going back and forth,  your  pet will have to have another  rabies jab, but you can still travel back with your ahc, then just. make sure that you have a holiday when the vacation is due the following year,  the rabies vaccination is yearly for this part of Spain

Or if you're  here  longer than the 21 day's it requires you to wait  then you can use your  pet passport  so then you can see it works,

When we arrived in 2018 our dog had had a 3 year rabies jab from UK. That remained valid and in 2021 we got the Spanish passport - as the U.K. had left the EU on 31.12.20. We retained the old Pet Passport as supplementary evidence. So in 2021 we began annual rabies jabs. I would not be happy with him having more than one rabies jab in a twelve months period.
