Hiya,

As far as I'm aware there was never a photo NIE card, only the paper version or a laminated card version (same green colour) with no photo. When the internet company said you needed the photo ID version, what they meant was the TIE card. For that, you need to go to the Oficina de Extranjeria (OdE) in C/ Marruecos, Almeria (behind the Mediterraneo shopping centre). I don't know how to do it in person because I used a friend who is a lawyer and her office prepared all the paperwork. Then all I had to do was show up at OdE (the lawyer arranged the appointment) to have my fingerprints taken and passport checked. At that appointment, I was given a paper covering my NIE (they took the old version) and an appointment paper which had a pre-arranged date two months hence. On that second appointment, the new TIE was ready to be picked up.

Good luck

Unfortunately OP can’t as they are Non-resident and TIE is for residents.

Good point, Dario, they missed the deadline to apply for the TIE. So how do non-residents who spend some time over here and have a Spanish property deal with service providers who ask for ID?

Damn good question.  If the service provider sticks to requesting a TIE and repeated responses that a person is non-resident and cannot *get* a TIE makes no difference … find a different service provider.

As mentioned earlier, many service providers are (erroneously) requesting a Padron from non-residents.

A Padrón, again is for residents only.  Whilst non-residents can get a Padron, the repercussions can be unfortunate and expensive, as the Padron states you are “habitually resident” here and that alerts the AEAT …

Thank you everyone for taking the interest and responding. The problem has arisen because I'm wanting to change internet provider from the very expensive Movistar to Digi. They seem to have mixed up the difference in the NIE and TIE. I'm going to try again today and explain. Fingers crossed.

Digi at least have a dedicated English service line … I’m with Digi, any problems give me a call, I’ll see what I can find

Thanks Martin (I hope that's right), I have called them, seemed to round in circles but I'm going to give the shop one more go.

Digi for me are the BEST.  1 Gb/s download and upload for 30€ per month.

The other thing with Digi is they keep upgrading their services and never charge more.  I have my phone with them as well, was getting unlimited national calls and 12 GB data for 6€.  It’s now still 6€, but 20GB of data, the unused portion of which rolls over at end of month …,
