Hello. I'm Krysy. First time posting on here. Could I ask how long the process takes to get the documents to locate from the UK and what documents will we need. Its me and the BF with 6 cats moving over, we'd like to be able to work in Spain if possible. What were the pitfalls you encountered? I've looked at some websites and it's seriously confusing. Thanks in advance

It's very much a case of how long is a piece of string as there will be so many factors involved depending upon your personal situation. I'm reading some reports lately that some people have managed to get their post-brexit visas through in a few months.
As you'll be aware, everything now has to be done through the Spanish Embassy (I believe there's one in London and one in Manchester) so to get the official & latest requirements I'd very much recommend you stick with their page
I guess there's a fundamental question in your work situation when you say you'd "like" to work. If you need to work then there's a number of hoops to jump through either in terms of having an official works contract from a spanish organisation or if you intend to be self-employed then there's other evidence you'll need to provide such as business plans/references etc
If you don't need to work then I'm assuming it'll be the NLV (non lucrative visa) that you'll be applying for but keep in mind that forbids you from working. You will however need to demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to be able to fund yourselves. The latest amounts are on the website and there's PDF documents that spell out all the docs & evidence you need for each type of visa.
Also keep in mind you'll need healthcare provision.
If you're on FB then I'd recommend joining the Citizens Advice Bureau Spain group as its tightly moderated & is a good source of info (they also have a corresponding webpage. the FB link is https://www.facebook.com/groups/citizensadvicespain
Unfortunately the post-brexit rules mean that the move is not as straight-forward as was previously available but from what I'm seeing there are people now beginning to get their visas so fingers crossed it'll work out for you all and the cats!

As RichB says, you cannot work here now without first obtaining a work permit.
There are two ways to go about that; the first is to have a skill that is on the Spanish shortage occupations list, then find an employer in Spain prepared to offer you a contract and apply for the work permit on your behalf.
The second and possibly more likely way is to be self-employed - Autónomo - and start your own business; as Rich points out though, the very least the embassy will require in support of that is a solid business plan outlining your proposal and probably pre-sales invoices / letters of intent from customers in Spain.
You can come out on an NLV, then after a year, at renewal time, apply for a work permit; this may give you time to find a business you can do and poll potential customers.
Working from home for an overseas company is also not allowed on an NLV - NLV means NO remunerated employment of any kind whatsoever, in any way, shape or form.
Spain *are* investigating a Digital Nomad visa that *would* allow this type of work, and would again be a pathway to permanent residency, alas at the moment it remains very much in the “thinking about it” stage.

Basically I fully agree with dario.on this matter,you have no chance but good luck anyway.times have changed now in Spain since we came out the EU.And there inforcing there ORIGINAL rules a lot more VIGILANT now.
But as dario said it's not impossible if you have the time and €€€€€.

Thank you, we've a year or so to go yet so hopefully they'll have sorted it out. I can work for my UK employer if I can get the correct visa

There is no timeline as yet on when - or even if - the Digital Nomad visa will be introduced.
If you’re only coming over in a year or so though, then there is the possibility that it’ll be in by then …
