Hi All.me and my husband are planning to winter in Vera this year and have been looking at medical insurance.Does anyone know if the new GHIC is acceptable for any treatment we may need it is our first time wintering away and are a little nervous to make sure we cover all eventualities.thanks maria
by winter you mean 90 days here and then return to the UK. Short term health insurance within your travel insurance may cover you. the card that was used for cover in Europe does not exist anymore for UK nationals coming here. There is a card for those who are resident here already to use when they travel throughout the rest of Europe. But travel insurance is necessary to come here now.

Travel insurance is always advisable, not least to cover any repatriation costs.
The new UK GHIC card covers medical treatment in the EU (and some other countries) in state medical facilities at the same cost as would apply to residents of that country. I have mine in preparation for future trips when we are permitted to travel.

I think your reply is wrong, the old EHIC (if still in date) & the new GHIC gives UK citizens the same Health Cover as before as these arrangements were carried over after Brexit, additionally EU visitors have the same health cover when visiting the UK. Of course Private Health Insurance is always recommended to cover repatriation etc if required. If anybody has any issues with these conflicting views, please read the Gov Website regarding health cover abroad.
