Looking ahead of our offer acceptance on a place today (yippee!) I just wanted to enquire about driving licenses. Can you have two?

I think my wife and I will be applying for Residencia within a month of ownership and certainly within one month of going on the Padron (I recall a post from Darius on this). We are under state retirement age so am aware of private medical and proof of income, although not of minimum amounts.

We plan to buy a Spanish car here and register for tax purposes too. I understand that we will have to 'give up' our UK licenses for Spanish ones but are worried where this leaves us when returning home and driving our UK car re insurance, police etc when visiting family etc. Also, does Spain require UK resident to have medicals etc to keep the licence etc when one reaches a certain age?

Firstly congratulations on your purchase.  Not sure of minimum amounts re income and savings in bank but you would be best to go on Facebook and log into Citizens Advice Spain.  They are very good and can help with most queries.  It works like a forum but they are on the button with legal requirements needed.  As to your UK driving license.  You are not supposed to have both as you hand in your UK license when applying for the Spanish one.  You need to renew this when you are 70yrs old too.  You do get a piece of paper to say you are ok to drive until you get your license and you can drive any car in the UK on it.  I would use a Gestor (we use Rosario in Linnitts) who can guide you through all these things as it is much easier especially if you don´t have fluent Spanish.  She can also arrange your NIE, Residencia and tax registration too.  Welcome to Turre and hope to see you around we live here too.
