Spanish Driving Licence

Looking ahead of our offer acceptance on a place today (yippee!) I just wanted to enquire about driving licenses. Can you have two?

I think my wife and I will be applying for Residencia within a month of ownership and certainly within one month of going on the Padron (I recall a post from Darius on this). We are under state retirement age so am aware of private medical and proof of income, although not of minimum amounts.

We plan to buy a Spanish car here and register for tax purposes too. I understand that we will have to 'give up' our UK licenses for Spanish ones but are worried where this leaves us when returning home and driving our UK car re insurance, police etc when visiting family etc. Also, does Spain require UK resident to have medicals etc to keep the licence etc when one reaches a certain age?

No, you can’t have two licenses - you surrender your U.K. licence when applying for Spanish Licence. Spain DGT will also check with DVLA to ensure you are not disqualified etc and that you haven’t reported your U.K. licence lost or stolen in an attempt to keep both.

If you live in Spain, you’ll be fine driving in U.K. on Spanish Licence whilst U.K. remains in EU. If / When Brexit occurs, I imagine you may need an International Driving Licence to support a Spanish Licence in U.K.

A medical is required to obtain a Spanish Licence when swapping from U.K. Licence, irrespective of age and will be required every time you renew; every 5 years I recall.
