Carnet de conducir is much easier than Residencia. You will have to go for a medical, which will involve a computer-based motor-skills test. There’s a few places affiliated with Tráfico that can administer this test and give you the necessary medical clearance. This costs 50€
Then it’s just a matter of filling in the application, supplying a photo (note: SMALLER than passport size) and taking UK Licence, medical clearance, photo etc to Tráfico in Almería. Tráfico will take your UK Licence and issue a temporary Licence. They will do checks with DVLA to ensure UK Licence not disqualified or reported lost or stolen.
Then your new Carnet de Conducir will be posted to you - usually within 3 months
Hi Dario,
thanks for the reply. where is the closest for the medical and comp test ? And do you know if there are any age restrictions as apply in the UK. Im 81 but fit and healthy of course lol. And Im assuming that appointments have to be made for both these ie health and police

Health check yes, you’ll need an appointment - not sure where the closest one to you is, but there is a centre in Vera opposite AM3 estate agents - can’t recall the name now. Tráfico I don’t believe you need an appointment (I was working so paid for my Asesora to sort it out :-D)
I’m not sure what restrictions apply, but we have a friend who is 80+ and driving so it’s definitely allowed. It’s possible that the licence may be valid only for a year, requiring annual medical checks to renew, I’m not certain.

The medical tests are somewhat arbitrary. Here in Roquetas last year there were two parts - an eyesight test (quite rudimentary) and a computer screen test of the ability to measure speeds. Last week friends went to the same test place: both of them had the same sight test, one then had their blood pressure taken (not something that should be done for official purposes by anyone other than a registered medical professional!) and the other had a colour blindness test! Neither were given the computer speed estimation test.
A bit of a racket ...

Very much so - here in Vera, I got the computer based test, but it wasn’t speed estimation - it was co-ordination and computer was linked directly to Tráfico. I then had eyesight, blood pressure and medical history query, but it was done by medical professionals.
Thanks for that info I will let you know how it goes when I go to the one in Garrucha. If they dont accept passport photo,s what did you use ?.And our biggest issue will be the fact they dont accept PO box as address our property is a bit out the way so no post deliver here!

When you get photos taken, just ask for “fotos para carnet de conducir” and you’ll get the right size.
You’ll have to supply physical address, as shown on your Padrón and Residencia card, but they will allow for a postal address to which to send the licence as well
