My wife and I have visited a couple of towns so far in the hope of buying a little bolt hole. They have both had their charms but we have not managed to find the right place as yet. Next on our list is Roquetas de Mar. It would be great to hear any thoughts people have on the town or advice about specific areas to look at (or avoid). We would like somewhere close to amenities but don't mind a short walk. Our budget will restrict us to apartments and we feel a pool would be essential.

While we accept the seasonal changes in a place like Roquetas, is there enough going on all year round to make visiting worthwhile? Any advice or thoughts welcome.

Hi. We have an apartment in Roquetas, at playa serena. Roquetas is a working town, mainly Spanish speaking, it's not what you would call a pretty town but it has everything you could wish for in close proximity. From where we are it is a 15 minute walk to the beach and 20 minute walk to all the bars and restaurants you could ever possibly need. A lot of the bars are open throughout the year, so you will always find something to do. There is an expat community and you will hear English voices in the bars, Roquetas has a large shopping complex ( Grand Plazza) it also has the equivalent to B & Q a short drive away along with Jysk, decathlon and ikea etc. Everything is flat for easy walking and it has miles of footpaths and cycle paths along the coast. The beach is shingle rather than soft sand. It does get busy in the main summer months. It's half hour from Almeria airport.

Hope this helps. Mike

There was a similar enquiry just a few months back and I and others responded in some detail then, as we live in Roquetas. If you try <Search> you should find something. Otherwise I would support much of what Mike&Leann says - except that whilst there are a few Brit bars the chances are you won’t hear as many English voices as you might hear in Mojacar. Roquetas is very much a Spanish town.

My mistake. I meant to say that you will hear the odd one or two English voices but mainly Spanish. I've just read my comment back and it is open to misinterpretation.

Hi Tony

Suggest rent a place for a month or so. That'll give you time to check out the area and see if it hits the spot for you.

If you use your time wisely you'll have time to find areas in Roquetas you like - and dislike. You'll need sort out stuff like banking, residency and social security numbers, if you haven't already done so.  Don't even begin to look at property until you've got these in place.

If you're non-EU you also gotta have your paperwork in place.

Good luck
