We have a place over here and would like to know if it would be possible to stay for a year , what it would involve and if it is possible

The very first question is “what passport do you hold?” If UK, the answer is an emphatic “no”, as you are restricted to 90 days in every 180 (unless you apply for a Non Lucrative Visa, but that is a path to residency, not a “long holiday” visa)
If you hold Irish / other EU passport then it’s easier, although the moment you stay longer than 183 days in the eyes of the Spanish Tax Office you become resident for tax purposes and liable to pay tax in Spain on worldwide income.

Sorry to jump on your reply. To get my mind straight, if we purchase a property we could stay 90 days leave for 90 days and then return for 90 days as long as in between we don't travel elsewhere in the EU

That is pretty much it, yes. Your 90 days must include both days of travel as well, if you fly into / out of Spain.
The regulations say that once you have completed 90 days in the Schengen zone, you must leave for an equivalent period (i.e. 90 days)

Thank you all for your replies yes new about the 90 days but didn't know if there was a way to try living out there for a year but never mind just a dream . My bubble was popped

You where born on the Isle of Ireland
One of your parents was born on the Isle of Ireland
One of your grandparents where born on the Isle of Ireland
If none of the above are a match you haven't got a hope in hell....
