To move or not to move permanently ,,???

Hi Sharon, When Brexit occurs you'll still be entitled to spend some months in Spain (and there is still negotiating being done before the leaving date regarding entry to Spain by UK residents). You won't have to surrender your passport or NHS entitlements. And the good news is you can rent a centrally located two bedroom apartment for around €700 per month which includes all utilities and internet.

You don't say when you are planning to come to Spain or whether you are already retired. Your options are becoming more limited.

Only by spending time here can you decide whether you will 'fit in'. All depends on your interests and past times.

To stay in Spain you will need Residencia. During The Brexit Transition period which ends December 2020 for retirees gaining residencia is relatively easy. Primarily, before the end of Dec 2020 you need proof of residence in Spain ( title deeds or tenancy agreement ) and your Padron certificate (  empadronamiento ).You would then have six months 'grace' in which to obtain your residencia certificate.  As  retirees you would need an S1 certificate from the NHS to guarantee healthcare in Spain ( which btw is very good ). You would also need a certificate from the Pension service stating your pension income entitlement.   

If you decide to come after 31st. it becomes a very different kettle of fish! Others here ( Dario in particular ) have much greater knowledge than I but essentially UK will be a third tier country. Qualification to live in Spain then becomes more difficult. Yes. a language test will be required together with greater income requirements. I'm not sure about healthcare. 

You may have to exchange passports as well as driving licences but if you decide to return to UK you will always be able to get them back.

I am sorry but I disagree here with you, Dario is summising on the tittle tattle that is going on NOW,

Last week Spain said no UK tourists without isolation,today it changed

NONE of us know EXACTLY what the 'arrangement' is going to be regarding residencia until nearer the time (including politicians in the UK/Spain)

in 2019 Brits spent apx  2 million euros per hour.

All that said yes get set to move,I would but work means I would only be there for 10 weeks max

We know exactly what the arrangement is.  Those still believing that there is a “special arrangement” for British nationals post 31/12 are living in a fools paradise.

As of 1/1/21, UK becomes a “third country”, it’s nationals subject to the general immigration regime.  There is NO discussion, or propositions for “special arrangements” - this is nothing but a fantasy of those that still misguidedly think “they need us more than we need them”

Still, if you wish to cross your fingers and hope for a “special arrangement”, it is of course no great concern to me.  I would just counsel those that choose to believe not to go saying “but how can this be?” When expected special arrangement doesn’t materialize and your “Spanish dream” becomes just that - a dream, and no more.

Nobody is suggesting that people from U.K. will not be able to holiday here.

Agreed. Spain will continue to be a holiday destination.  It is just becoming a resident that will be more difficult
