You can do this yourself, but you’ll need to read and speak some Spanish to make and attend appointment or use a translator. Rather than use a lawyer you could use a “Gestor” or a visa agent instead these may be cheaper options. 

Irrespective of what you choose to do I would strongly caution you against using any lawyer recommended by an estate agent. This site and others is full of horror stories from people who have done this. If you want recommendations again this forum and others will assist.

Agree entirely with Ian. Never use a Solicitor recommended in this way. To whom would loyalty be owed. Unless it's Amanda Oakley of Zurgena.

You could try her for NIE or CAT SERVICES of La Alfoquia.

As warren says, we did the same London consulate and at that time we could not speak a bit of Spanish just cost a few pounds best to make an apountment befor hand there is a lot of people will charge the earth out in Spain
