Moving pot plants

are you moving them from Spain? you are not allowed to take any plant life into the UK as far as I am aware.  Not sure what the rules are coming the other way a good removal company will advise you on that one/

We have taken orange, lime & lemon trees back to the UK in the car on several occasions and in full view at border control in Portsmouth. Friends that have moved back to the UK have sent pot plants with no problem via removal companies.

I had hoped to move some of my ( spanish) plants over to the mainland and was told I can with a special form... I've gone no further as yet but...as a gardener, if your planning on taking azaleas from the UK to Spain? ( you don't say but its most likely you are) 

Be prepared...you will lose them for sure...the clay soil of the UK allows for the glorious azaleas, rhododendrons and hydrangeas, we all love. The temperate climate attracts plants which are happy in cooler conditions, Almost anywhere in Spain the tap water here is totally unsuitable for these plants... the weather is too hot not to have to water them... and they just hate the heat. The climate and soil in Spain does not bode well for many British plants. 

Often, the earth will be very dry for several months and temperatures too high to sustain many of them and the soil...in pots, you can use ericaceous compost — and keep them shaded and with lots of attention happy enough but even so you need to water them every day in summer and that's tap water.

I know how hard it is...I give my azaleas a fortnightly dose of high-potash liquid fertiliser between March and Aug. That fosters flower production, but they'll also benefit from a spring boost with Sequestrene, a mineral tonic designed to promote healthy foliage. But my goodness do you have to work at keeping them happy, essentially lots of overhead shade...courtyards and living at higher altitudes will help.But mine are not sentimental to me and even with all my care and attention I do loose them...

My advice..if their truly sentimental...pass them onto someone you know will care and love them...in the UK !

You have been able to take them freely to the UK under EU freedom of movement rules. These will cease at the end of December, after which you will be required to produce import documentation. This applies only to shipments to/from UK. You will probably have to evidence thst the plants and the soil they are rooted in are healthy and free of alien bodies
