What Kathy has not said is that she has an Irish passport so there is no rush for her to get residencia, like there is for UK citizens. I have given her a lot of advice and suggestions when we met in Roquetas in January. There should be no issue, as Dario has said, in collecting her NIE in May.

My passport did not speed up or make the process of obtaining a NIE any easier. My main aim at the beginning was to obtain a NIE because of renting a property and on advice of the rental agency to open a bank account so that rent, electric and water bills could be paid - as I would not always be in Spain. Residency for me has to be thought out more carefully as I have had to-date, 6 live-saving heart procedures and must continue to do so for the rest of my life. At my last check-up, I spoke to my cardiologist regarding a permanent move to Spain and further necessary treatment. If I took up residency in Spain I could not return to the UK for treatment - so I have to make a choice.

Hi All
I am new to the forum , some very useful information for me to consider. I wish to make the move to Spain . And taking in consideration numerous posts I now intend to rent for a few years keeping a flat in the UK. I do work and travel worldwide extensively.
with the “B” word on the cards I need to get a move on but difficult as work commitments prevent me getting to Spain soon .
Is there any advantage in getting my NIE done remotely? can that be done ? just thought it may help to get the ball rolling before Brexit , any thoughts ?
many thanks in advance
David

A NIE is just a financial number and unless you intend to make some big ticket purchases here (i.e. car) it will make not the slightest difference. With the possibility of the B word looming large, what is really necessary now is to get here and get on the Padrón before B-Day. If you can do that, you can show legal residency in Spain and that will be the determiner (according to information from La Moncloa) as to whether you apply for Residencia / TIE as a resident prior to B Day or under the general immigration regime if after (assuming no deal, and subject to change ...)

Many thanks, so basically I need to get down there rent a property and get on the Padron ....possibly maybe not before 31st Oct . Is the Padron a time consuming process or relatively simple ?

Padrón is the simplest of all the processes; it’s a matter of going into Ayuntamiento with rental documents and whatever else is needed to show you “reside” at that address. Don’t need NIE for that, passport is fine.
