Hi Barnarda,

We are Spanish residents, we own property here and also in the UK. We have to make a tax declaration in Spain and also in the UK. The Spanish tax bill is horrendous over £2000 per year, (on money earned in the UK!!) the UK one minimal approx £100 per year, we do both via accountants so one assu...

...mes they know what they are doing!!!!!.

I hope this helps.

jenni wish we had a bill of 2000euros ours is well over double that after we have declared our pensions, premium bond winnings (we seem to be lucky with the small ones) interest on a small amount of savings all of which has to be taxed in Spain including husband's Army pension which used to be tax free.  Why do you pay tax in UK and Spain surely you are resident in Spain and pay tax here not in UK as well.

Alicia, I have asked this question so many times, why do we paid in it both places, when ever thing you read says you should only pay it in the country you are resident in. But we do, I have been to 4 Spanish accountants and they all say the same, and the UK inland rev say the same, I gave up years ago, cos the UK amount is so small.

Thank you Jenny.
we have to follow the law 100%.

I will ask the tax office people. But I also have a property in Chile. That I don’t rent it out either.

You know, thinking about it  I think we are better to go to Spain for three months every 6 months. I hope it’s easy to get into Spain after Covid-19 and Brexit. I will be very prepared.

Thank you a lot for your help Jenny

Your very welcome Bernarda, I think thats sounds like a good plan to me. Save all that Spainish bureaucracy. I hope it all works out for you.

You own a house in Spain and the UK and believe a £2000 tax bill is horrendous.

Unsure what world you are living in!!!!!

Why is that amount of tax not horrendous ?

I’m just so glad we didn’t go for residency with 5 U.K.  properties ,only one let out , and  a Spanish villa . It was purely the fact that a high end house in U.k. would then become a holiday home !   along with the rest of them and attract tooooo much Spanish tax. If Brex had happened after they were all sold ,that would have made a difference.  I think it’s ridiculous too, that you pay all that tax to the Hacienda.

I wish we hadn;t gone for residencia either, I think you did the right thing, we got residency long before Bretix was ever muted, but when we were Non residence we just paid Non residence tax and life was very simple (tax wise). 2000 euro's might not be a lot to some people but it is to us, especially as its money earned outside this country.

I was going for it thinking at the last minute i can cancel. or indeed give it up at any time. Now i’m simply relieved 90 in 180 will do fine, no hassle ,a bit of tax on my house in Spain till i get rid of it and all great . I think the Spanish will get greedier too lol.

The difference between non residence tax and residence tax is huge, I think we paid 150 ish euro's a year non residence and now its over the 2000 just for the privilege of being a resident. Plus they make you jump thru hoops to fill out the form, wanting tenants names, where they work and their address. I'm afraid I just refused to give the Spanish Government my tenants private information. I am sure your right they will just get greedier.

I see that having a property in Spain is not so great as tv programs show.  However, based on your responses, it’s not good idea to get a residency and still have a property in UK. I decided to simply use the time you can be there as a tourist. That will do for us

There is still an option, if we would like to live there definitely, is best to sell any property in the UK. I believe that’s the best option if you want to be resident.
I am curious now, with Brexit, how easy is to enter into Spain. That’s why I thought with residency it will be easier to cross the border. But I see it’s not good idea.

I am curious now,  when COVID is over, how difficult or easy it will be to enter into Spain. I think I need to wait and see.

Thank you for all your comments!
