not saying that you need to speak Spanish just that it may be a requirement at some time, and as now you just can't swop your driving licence and have to take a Spanish driving test so some language could be helpful. Those of us who are already here are the lucky ones.

To answer your question, it was mooted some time ago that a Spanish language test would be included along with visa application; this however never came to fruition and so a Spanish language test is only required if after 10 years of legal residency you apply for Citizenship.
THAT BEING SAID ... Please remember that this is Spain and Whilst it does have 4 official languages, English is not one of them. Depending on where you live, a basic ability to converse in Spanish will save you a lot of hassle. Irrespective of where you live, you MAY be lucky enough to have say a doctor that speaks English, or a Dentist - but don't count on it. All official notices and services are in Spanish. You can of course rely on a translator for those times you have to deal with officialdom, buuuuuuuuuut that could get pricey (unless it's a friend doing it for free of course)
But you'll also miss out on a lot of the culture and humour if you don't have a basic grasp of the language. In the end, it's up to you, but speaking even a bit of Spanish smooths the way here.
Thanks to everyone that took the time to reply to my query much obliged
