Hi.

Does any one know of a shop selling fresh herbs and spices especially Indian. We both enjoy making currys and find all the supermarkets sadly lacking in ingredients especially paste. Many thanks.

Hi Dave

We cook a LOT of Chinese and Indian food and we buy herbs and spices from the market at Puerto Lumbreras (on Fridays). The lady there speaks very good English and if you don't see what you want on display she has boxes with other herbs and spices with her.  Fresh hot chillies and ginger also found at this market from the fruit and veg stalls. For fresh coriander you will get this at Lidl or Mercadona. Consum also sells hot Chillies, ginger, coriander.  If you are into Chinese cooking you can get fresh beansprouts from Consum or Mercadona.  You can also get beansprouts in jars from Mercadona and they are in fact a good standby.

With regards to paste, Iceland at Vera stock some but I refuse to pay EUR 4 for a tiny jar of Thai Curry Paste so will make my own.

Happy cooking!

Lorna

In Roquetas the best places for curry pastes are Spar (in Serena district) and Carrefour at Gran Plaza which does popadoms and nan breads. Mercadona does a good range of spices and Consum in town has a few ingredients.

Chapatis? If anyone can find them here I’d be amazed! We make do with tortillas instead...

Chris
