Hi, a family member has recently purchased a property in Albánchez and is relocating from Ireland with their family. I am planning to visit over July/August in hopes of gaining more knowledge of the area, locals and job opportunities. I am a qualified primary school teacher but will happily take on works in a bar, restaurant, shop, cleaning or farm work etc. I have a very basic Spanish, however, I am fluent in Irish and am currently learning more Spanish via a mobile app. I would be grateful for honest views on job prospects within a 25km radius of the town. I am a 24 year old female and can drive. Any information of where to look or how to start would be greatly appreciated. All hypothetical at the moment, however, due to rising political tension, I am eager to leave Northern Ireland.

first do you have an Irish passport? if the answer is no you will not be able to come here and get work and live easily that's if you could find work anyway.  there are a great many Spanish youngsters who seek the work you do and they speak the lingo.  it is not the easy way it was.

Hi Meabh, I know as a citizen of the island of Ireland you can have an Irish passport, and with a name like Meabh, it’s a dead cert 😉.

Alba chef is in the back of beyond and not rich pickings for a job.....if anywhere in Spain is at the moment. Have you thought about a larger town city where you could possibly find work as an English teacher.

Spanish is a must and as a teacher I’m sure if you did an intensive course you would pick it up easily. I think you will struggle to find a decent paying job, people are begging for jobs at the moment to feed their families.

Just one more question, what political tension is happening in Northern Ireland?

Political tensions in Northern Ireland, please tell?

Hi Jack,

Thanks for your reply and yes I do have an Irish passport lol. I’m not looking to move permanently as of yet and may not even start the process for a year or two! English teaching is looking like the most likely route, but I’ll hopefully explore this summer! Thanks for the heads up on the Spanish, no time like a lockdown to start the ground work :) cheers

Good luck to you Meabh. We might, ok I might, come across as grumpy oldish expats, but keep in touch with the forum as we have years of experience here.

Many people on this forum believe it is better to be a citizen of the EU than a British subject, at the moment if you are young and seeking employment, or even if you have paid employment you might wonder.  If you are elderly or health compromised hoping for immunisation, ditto.   Anyway,  I am sure you will very much enjoy visiting Spain and knowing the language will be a huge benefit.

Teaching English is likely the way to go BUT ... not short term.  Most language schools will be looking for a minimum 9 month commitment (September to June) and a grasp of Spanish will be essential - difficult to teach someone a language if you can’t make yourself at least understood to explain a particular word.

Bar work .... mmmm not a great time for that.  This years tourist season is already looking dubious and the last year has permanently closed a few bars and restaurants - less places to employ you and more experienced people looking to grab what is available.

Perhaps you could look for on-line work Meabh, before you come to Spain, then continue it on arrival?  There will be a huge need for qualified teachers to help tutor children catch up on the earning they missed during Covid, and Irish people needing Gaelic exam passes to get certain categories of work?  This way you will earn money at the professional  level, then perhaps get some voluntary part time occupation to help in meeting people in Spain? Good luck anyway.
