I have just aquired an Irish passport as I have Irish citizenship due to my mother being born in Ireland.
What are the implications of this for my wife and daughter if we were to relocate to Spain? I am retired.

Hi Len, Congratulations on getting your Irish passport. Your move to Spain will be much easier than anybody with a non EU passport. Your wife and daughter can piggyback on yours too.
If your daughter is unmarried, I would advise that she should apply for an Irish passport before she marries. If she is already married to a non Irish person she likely will not qualify for an Irish passport.

Unlike me (a child of an Irish born parent), my daughter is not automatically an Irish citizen and I believe she would have to apply for citizenship before being granted a passport. This is a long and expensive process I am told.
I wonder if you know what rights my wife and daughter would have in Spain. e.g. residency, medical care, employment etc.

Hi Len technically your daughter is entitled to an Irish passport, the requirement is a parent or grandparent born in Eire.
It's very easy to get your wife to get her residency, she has 3 months to apply once you arrive

You will arrive and apply for Residencia on the strength of your Irish passport. You will immediately have the right to reside and work; your daughter and wife can apply as Dependents / Family members of an EU citizen and will also have the automatic right to reside and work

Just to confirm the strength of an Irish passport, the grandchildren of Irish passport holders automatically qualify for one almost automatically. It doesn’t work the other way round. Both my grandfathers were born and lived in England; I don’t qualify for a UK passport. I have my reasons to obtain one in addition to my Irish passport.
