If your friend or his family has a landline phone, it should be possible to find him with UK directory enquiries or a directory site like 192.com.

If you come across someone with a similar name, it is possible they might be related or at least aware of your friend's location. 

Finally if you know anyone in Scunthorpe who has a bit of spare time on their hands, you could ask them look for your friend in the electoral register.  If the electoral register in Scunthorpe is online, you can do this yourself.
