Hi. We are permanent residents in Spain and are considering applying for the Convenio Especial. We currently have private health insurance and are both under 65. I appreciate that the costs goes up once we are 65. Are there any disadvantages to being on the Convenio? Thanks.

We enjoyed Convenio Especial for about 5 years, it gives you access to the local very good GP’s and nurses in Vélez Blanco and also A&E, but you do pay 100% prescription charges.

We have recently upgraded as we have enjoyed residencia for over 5 years, have permanente TIE cards, together with a letter from the NHS stating we are not entitled to NHS cover. We were given a link by the British Consulate in Alicante to a Spanish government website. We completed online and they replied by email 2 days later to say we were successful. We now enjoy free Spanish National Health and prescription charges that employed people enjoy. If you would like more information private message me.

Many thanks for your reply. That's very reassuring to hear the medical service in Veléz Blanco is good.

Forgot to say we are in our 60’s and don’t pay anything now for our healthcare just the prescription charge which I used to pay €25,00 for my monthly tablets & now pay €10,00.
