There are three ways to get a work visa.  The first is to be offered a full time contract by a company in Spain; the company must prove that your skills cannot be found anywhere else in Europe.

The second way is to be Autónomo - self-employed.  To do that you must have a viable business plan and clients in Spain willing to provide letters of intent / contract for work.

A third way has recently come to light and that is the Digital Nomad Visa; here you must be working online and have been working for the same company / contract for at least one year prior to application.  No more than 20% of your income can be derived from companies based in Spain.

@Paula1962; the only viable Visa for a years stay is the Non Lucrative Visa.  You will need to apply via the consulate in UK and it requires police clearances, medical clearances, proof of Spanish compatible health insurance and proof of available funding of 28.800€.  Such funding can be made of savings / pension / rental income etc etc.

The NLV is a path to residency, but if you are only intending to stay a year, you simply don’t renew the Visa.  It *is* an expensive process to apply though, costing I believe about £5.000 or thereabouts for the entire application
