Me again with another query from my list.

I receive two pensions.

One is from the Irish Government in the form of Old Age Pension.

The second is a private pension from the Irish Airline.

Both are taxed at source by the Irish Revenue Commissioners and the net amount goes directly to my bank account.

If I move to Spain permanently do I have to pay tax on my pensions there as well?

Regards

Pat

I’m no expert but I think that what happens is you have to declare your  income for the calendar year you live in Spain (183days). You should not have to pay tax again on it if you can show that you have already paid tax in Ireland. This is known as the double taxation rule - you don’t pay tax twice on the same income.

Indeed, although you declare income in both territories, the double taxation agreement means you only pay tax in one territory (Ireland).

Thanks Rob and Chrisso.

I had heard about this double taxation agreement but wasn't sure how it worked. Some comments on the internet says I'd pay tax on Spain on the airline pension and get my pension people in Ireland to get an exemption from tax in Ireland. I have sent a message to the Irish tax authorities for clarification and will also get advice from Spanish lawyer.
