Hi just moved into apartment and if we have too many appliances in the electric trips I know this used to happen when I lived here 20 years ago but surely not now .. can anyone shed any light on this if they have had the same experience and should we just get local electrician or is it the electric company at fault and should we be contacting them ? Thanks

Hi,

The standard electrical supply here is 5KW, unlike the UK which is 30 kw!!!! We have the same problem here in Vera and we have just having our supply upgraded to 9/10KW. This has to be done through a registered electrician who will take you through the process with Endesa. Unfortunately we had to upgrade our main supply cable from the road to the house which has meant digging a 127 feet trench to house the new cable so a very expensive business....but probably worth it.

Often, smaller apartments have electricity contracted for a very low amount of kw.  I believe that the minimum one can contact is around 2.5kw. We have recently bought a small 1 bedroom apartment in Roquetas and were surprised that our bills were so high when we only use it for about 4 days a month - relatively higher than the bills for our normal home in the Sorbas area.   The reason was that the apartment was contracted for over 5kw (our home only gets 3.5kw approx!) so we went to the Endesa office and asked to lower the amount contracted for the same as we have for the house because the higher your kw limit,, the more they charge you before adding on the amount of electricity you've used and then the VAT (IVA) on the total amount!  Likewise, if you want to raise your input all you do is go to the Endesa office in Garrucha and say that you want to increase the amount of electricity contracted and take your most recent bill with you.  No need to call an electrician at all!  Our small apartment has a TV, washing machine, electric water heater, cooker, fridge freezer, one air conditioning unit, ceiling fan and microwave, but at home I have more appliances but no AC, just to give you some idea.

We had a similar issue here at Valle del Este - unfortunately the main switch was also too small for the load at 15A, so as well as getting Iberdrola to raise us from 3kW to 4,6kW we also had to get the main switch changed from a 15A to a 25A to handle the increased load.  Worked a treat, no more problems and landlord paid for the switch to be replaced.

It would be worthwhile checking the Amperage of your main switch ....

Just an adjunct to the above - the higher the potential, the more you get charged and electricity is very very expensive.  Unless you are running a few heaters, electric blankets, reverse cycle air-conditioners, I doubt you’ll need as high as 10kW - even 5kW would be a lot!!

If you are only going up to 4,6kW or even 5kW you won’t need an electrician - you simply make the request to the electricity company and they put you on the next level.

We run a 1kW UPS for all the computer equipment, two laptops, fridge, microwave, electric oven, kettle, TV, media box, sound bar and assorted chargers and 4,6kW is more than ample ......
