Buenas Dias

We are recent permanent residents in Spain. We are looking to buy possibly in the Vera area, La cabuzana and wondered if anyone could give us their opinion/experience good or bad?
Or any other areas as suggestions.

We are young retirees, we are not party animals but do like to socialise, a couple of bars restaurants will suffice but must have a bit of wintertime ‘life’ and some amenities, docs, dentist etc etc. We like to eat all kinds of food from all nations. Do not want to be in a ‘typical Spanish village but at the same time don’t want to be with an army of expats. somewhere in between where I can improve my Spanish and get to know the people but still have access to Brit’s and other nationalities. We love long dog walks, cycling, padel for the hubby and horse riding for me and working with rescue horses/donkeys. We come from a small uk village which had a gastro pub to walk to and nothing else, but we were a 15 min drive from a market town with lots more when needed, so although we don’t want ex pat city Brit’s abroad, we don’t want rural either.
All helpful comments appreciated.

Gracias

Hi Diddys, I live in Vera Playa and work in Vera.

La Cabuzana is situated roughly halfway between Vera and Vera Play and the biggest thing happening there is a massive amount of construction for the new high speed railway which goes through.  La Cabuzana isn’t a small village, it’s an urbanización and is quite remote, but I don’t believe it will offer you the recreation you are looking for.  It will of course expand rapidly when the AVE goes live because it is virtually right on the line.

So, options.  Garrucha is a very nice seaside town with some British and other influence, it is 90% Spanish - but is apartment living, the complete opposite of rural.  It would certainly offer you the social side you seek, even in Winter.

Puerto Rey / Vera Playa may also offer some of what you want - certainly the social life, both now in summer when their respective populations swell with tourism, and indeed in Winter where many bars etc remain open (the big hotels close September to June though)

You have the other side of Puerto Rey, which appears to be split, which is immediately behind the Puerto Rey Mercadona.  Very nice urbanizaciones there, and handy for shopping.

Vera Pueblo is a typically Spanish town. Very little English spoken here, plenty of Tapas, bars, restaurantes, cafés etc and some good valued properties down by La Palmeral with gardens etc.  Vera itself is convenient for buses, walking trails, cycle trails.

There is also Valle del Este, just outside Vera and situated conveniently on the 700 turnoff of the E15-A7.  Valle del Este has some very nice and very expensive properties, a massive golf course, PLENTY of walking and cycling trails inside and a centro comercial with a Spanish restaurant and an English sports bar.

The Valle del Este hotel, next to the centro comercial, also has a very nice spa that residents of Valle del Este can gain discounted access to all year round.

Oh wow, thank you so much. We have a dog and will be getting another rescue friend so need a villa, we also like outdoor space so apartment living is definitely not for us so probably not garrucha. It’s hard to find what we want, not total rural living but not in a massive widespread urbanization where it’s just house after house for miles, but smaller urbanizations are fine as long as we have some decent views. We had a holiday home in villamartin for 15 years and are currently staying at my brothers in the same area whilst we find somewhere and I couldn’t think of anything worse than living here permanently.. but we don’t want to be inland or in a remote area/town. I suppose we will know it when we see it!

Ok … well I would suggest checking out Vera Pueblo (8 kms from the sea, and I walk in two or three times a week from Vera Playa so not far) or Valle del Este, which again is about the same from the sea.  I lived at Valle Del Este for a while and loved it there.  It’s a self contained “area” which is a humongous golf course with various urbanizaciones built around it.  I lived at Los Almendros, but unfortunately I was renting and owner sold the house.  It was a duplex with a garden - and community fees covered maintenance of the garden.

probably the nicest urbanización there is Agave Real - really REALLY nice places with BIG gardens - but there’s quite a few other urbanizaciones spread around VdE and it may be worth your while having a look.

I know a couple of estate agents here, one of whom is a very very good friend (full disclosure) and I’d be happy to pass her details to you - I don’t know if she has anything at VdE right now but she’d be worth talking to - especially if you drop my name 😁
