The NIE has nothing to do with your Tax status or your Healthcare Provision or pretty much anything else appertaining to your place of residence. But it is needed to buy a car/property, etc. For all the rest you need your Residencia, that's a separate issue. On advice we obtained NIEs for our sons to facilitate matters after our death but they live in UK. Under existing EU regulations you are allowed Healthcare in ONE EU Member State. To get that in Spain as an OAP or disabled, etc you have to obtain a load of forms from Newcastle, obtain your Spanish Residencia, possibly prove financial viability, and loads of other hoops with Social Security here, etc. Ours were 13 yrs ago and lots have changed and I don't have those details. This is why so many of us oldies are concerned regarding Brexit & the outcome of Reciprocal Healthcare provision. You sign on in Spain and you are then entitled to A&E only in UK. But so many blag both systems.
Love Spain but sometimes think the great dictator is still alive and well and just think if all those Civil Servants you would make redundant!!!!!
No need to worry, it's purely administrative. Sorry if a bit complicated.
