My Husband and I are staying in Vera for 5 months over the winter.  We both require medication.  I understand that we need to register with a doctor.  Can anybody recommend one and also we will require medication - blood pressure and statins for myself and asthma/gout for my     husband. Do we get prescriptions from the Doctors or can we just purchase from chemists? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Not sure if I replied to you before but certain Pharmacies have no compunction about selling OTC to Brits. The.one near Parador/ LaCaixa Bank/Centro Commercial, Mojacar Playa will even sell antibiotics. So either take in the labels of the medication or write/print out the names and dosages and numbers required and hand it over the counter. We have a home in Australia and buy up to 12 months at a time in dribs and drabs before we go.

It's'not a problem but no discount for age. Only with Dr's prescription.

Hi Bob

Thank you for replying so quickly. This is my first post on here as I was a bit confused about replies to another post. We'll be in Vera next month and really looking forward to our stay.

So glad to hear you are a newbie. The other abused professional courtesy regarding  change in statins.

Honestly it's so easy here and especially in a Holliday area. The Pharmacy we use near our GP in Puerto Lumbreras is happy to sell us the beta-blockers. Omeprazole, etc but certainly wouldn't sell antibiotics OTC.

Hope you have a lovely time and save the GP for actual illnesses.

Hi Bob

Thank you again for your reply. I'll also be looking in other forums on this site for hints and tips.

Hi, are you of pensionable age ?

Both my partner and myself are and pay just 10% of the cost of a prescription.

You can register with a local doctor or even at a local hospital, we live in a small village called Urcal close to a larger town called Huercal Overa, we're registered with the village doctor who when we were applying for our medical cards checked the meds we were on and told us what the Spanish equivalents were, bobs right in saying you can literally just walk into a pharmacia here and buy lots of meds just by showing the boxes, quite a lot of pharmacia here speak good English and are very helpful.

Sometimes it's 50%, depends on the meds.

But it's true that if you just walk in with an empty box, they will sell you another one, no questions asked. Probably not for really serious medications though I guess.
