Thank you for accepting me into your forum.  We moved from the UK almost 10 years to Brittany, France and are now planning to move to Spain, we would appreciate any helpful advice or information from anyone who has recently made the move from France to Spain, we know the border between France & Spain is at present closed, for example we are finding it difficult to obtain travel regulations for people who are moving from France to Spain to live travelling down by road during the covid restrictions.  Many thanks, Vivion

Hi Vivion, and welcome to the forum.

To be quite honest, it is almost impossible for anyone here to give you detailed, accurate information on the information you have given, as there are so many variables.

Basically, travel throughout France and Spain is heavily restricted, so firstly, do you have a justifiable reason to travel throughout France under French restrictions, then the same question under Spanish restrictions. Do your specific circumstances amount to necessary travel?

You mention you are planning to move to Spain. Do you have an address here, are you 'returning home', do you have work contracts, padron, residency? Or are you planning to come and look for your next home?

Do you have a home in France or have you sold up and you have evidence to justify a move across international borders during the current state of alarm in both countries?

Are you UK nationals with French residency planning to relocate under WA protections? WA doesn't confer onward freedom of movement for instance. Or are you French citizens or citizens of another EU country?

I'm not asking for answers to these questions, I'm simply atating that they all have a bearing on how and whether you can justify your journey to both the French and Spanish authorities as and when you are asked to do so.

It's a very difficult time to try and relocate, and you have my sympathies, but please don't rely on forums such as this, I'd suggest you approach your local French police to understand whether your journey would be considered necessary, and then do the same in the Spanish province you intend to travel to, get written answers and carry them with you if you decide to travel.

Thank you for your in-depth reply, I probably didn’t put the question very well.  Our house is sold and nearing completion here in France, we are a retired couple wanting to make a permanent move to Spain - we were just wondering if anyone had made this type of move during the restrictions....however looks like we will just have to be patient and wait for the borders to reopen.  Thanks again.

I forgot to mention, I am a European citizen and my husband has French residency under Article 50.  We have booked a rental apartment in Vera for a month for the middle of April whilst we look for a new home Covid restrictions allowing.

It’s difficult to find the regulations as most relate to UK citizens (3rd country nationals). I am also trying to find the answers to the same question. As EU citizen and French resident my understanding is yes you can travel but you will need to prove it is “essential travel”. The below links may help you decide

Thank you very much for forwarding this link to me.....I will read it through and see if a one way trip for permanent residence is possible at this time.  👍
