Saw this following excerpt (full story linked at end)

Now, after the introduction of roundabouts in Spain in 1976, the Direccion General de Trafico (DGT) is cracking down hard in 2024. Misusing roundabouts could cost carefree drivers a whopping €500 fine and slap six penalty points on their licence.

This should prove mighty interesting.  Should Spain need to refill its coffers, then this would be an excellent way of doing it.

I’d very much like to believe that DGT is actually going to start enforcing this - but then that means Guardia Civil and Policía Local will have to lift their own game when navigating roundabouts.

I am not in any way denigrating those fine bodies; the men and woman who serve do a damned difficult job.  I just wonder whether after so long of poor driving practice on roundabouts being accepted, they can find the will to start fining people.

Having been stopped and ticketed for speeding this time last year, I do know when they turn their mind to something, they certainly do it effectively - and professionally.

Ah as the saying goes

Chance would be a fine thing.

It's going to take a boat load of bodies to enforce this.  As any driver in Spain knows and will agree with there are probably 8 out of 10 who don't follow any rules on roundabouts. The bigger ones especially, looking at you IKEA roundabout in Murcia as an example. It's a free for all squeaky bum time when using it.

A rule I learned in another city  from a yellow cabbie worry about what's in front of you and f&%k what's behind  ya

This seems to be the accepted  attitude of all nationalities that drive in Spain.

Except possibly you Brits who are so well trained (read paranoid about be caught on camera breaking the rules of the road) it takes a few years for youse to get in to the swing of things

FYI Exiting from the inside lane is one of the most common incorrect manoeuvres and also one of the most dangerous. It is also the most frequent cause of unwanted introductions for strangers.

And that’s one of the ones that carries the heaviest fine - 500€ and 6 points off your licence

Laughable and completely unworkable. I disagree with 8 out of 10 people who misuse roundabouts, it's easily 9 out of 10 and the 1 out of 10 that do use roundabouts correctly are actually dangerous because they are in such a minority.

The boat has well and truly sailed in terns of teaching people to use roundabouts properly. Even driving instructors don't teach it correctly.

The general rule should be, there are no rules.

Thank you for sharing the article. I regularly drive in Spain and have seen various techniques for navigating roundabouts. On a daily basis I watch vehicles go around the outside lane failing entirely to signal at entry or exit. One’s observationskills are required to be on point. Just the other day a car pulled right across the front of my car at a roundabout nearly resulting in a collision.

I think this using roundabouts incorrectly is not helped by the lack of signaling. As any good driver is aware your supposed to use your indicators to let other road users know what your about

So if a vast majority of drivers do not use them normally what makes the coppers think they can start enforcing it on roundabouts.

According to Spain's Observatory of Behavior on Motorways, 74% of drivers do not indicate before overtaking another vehicle and very few do so when changing lanes or turning.

Why is this? Who knows lazy, entitled, dumb?

I do find it hard to believe that driving schools do not teach the correct use of them after all it's is part of the Skills driving test.

As for 'the general rule should be, there are no rules' statement what in the name of Jaysus does the mean?? When out driving reenact Death Race 2000?

The inside lane is the right hand lane

In your picture it tells you car in left lane is in the wrong

It is in the wrong.  In Spain, even if it’s a dual lane carriageway exiting the roundabout, you MUST move into the right-hand, outer lane of the roundabout before exiting the roundabout.

In the case pictured, the yellow car is 100% in the wrong under Spanish law.

The inside lane in Spain is the left lane yes the picture shows the orange car in the wrong what are you trying to say?

The basic principle is that if you are entering and turning right, stay in the right hand/outside lane and before entering, indicate right and keep the indicators on until you exit. If you're going straight on, do not indicate before or on entering the roundabout.
