Hi,

I am driving my UK car over to Spain next month. I will be at present a non-resident, but I believe my insurance will only cover me for 28 days in Europe. Can anyone recommend a company to insure my car while I am in Spain.

Thanks

Michelle

Saga in the UK will cover you for 12 months in Europe. However as a non resident you can’t legally drive you UK car in Spain for more than 6 months of the year.

Hi Michelle, further to that, you can’t insure your UK plated car through a Spanish insurer.  You would need either to matriculate your UK car to Spanish plates (an expensive process) or buy a Spanish plated car

Yes you can,use one of the companies based in Gibraltar such as Abbeygate. However I would stay clear with Ibex as I had a bad( and expensive) experience with them.......

As I said, you cannot use a Spanish insurer.  Based in Gibraltar, they fall outside of that description.  So I’ll clarify - you will not be able to use any of the insurers based in mainland Spain and and falling under Spanish law unless your car is matriculated to Spanish plates.

Also, post-Brexit, no one - not even U.K. government - has any idea of how things will change, as we don’t yet know what type of Brexit it will be (or even IF there will be a Brexit).  There will certainly be a new PM, who may have different ideas of how it should be structured. Gibraltar is a contentious issue  between the two countries; there is no guarantee that such insurance, if obtained, will continue to be valid.

Gibraltar insurance companies are a "grey" area here in Spain. You don't really know they are until you get your insurance documents.I had my UK Saab insured with them and they paid out eventually when it was written off by a friend of mine here in Palomares. You have to be careful though, originally they only offered 2300 euros which I said was derogatory and we eventually settled the claim at 5300 euros. So don't accept their first offer...😁

Rumoured they can check from your NIE,ferry documentation, utility bills etc.I guess it depends how strict they want to enforce it.Personally I have never had trouble driving a UK vehicle down here, car and motorbike but you do here of people getting done.Like all of Spanish bureaucracy it varies from place to place...
