I'm looking to open a bank account in Spain now that I've bought a flat in Vera. I don't want any charges for maintaining the account, which will always be left in credit. I've no need for a credit card. I do plan to transfer monies from the UK so as to withdraw funds from Spanish ATMs as and when necessary. I'd ideally not want any charge for doing such transfers nor for ATM usage.

I won't currently be setting up any direct debits (possibly one for a cheap SIM contract) but not utilities etc., as they will be in someone else's name.

What are the best options, whether online-only or high-street, to meet these needs?

I’d suggest Sabadell Vera.  Staff are really good and speak English.  Their Expansión account is completely 100% fee free and requires only a deposit of 700€ per month to keep it fee free.  You won’t get a credit card unless you ask for it and they will issue you a debit card that works on MasterCard system.

The account documentation can be given in English and at the ATM you can set English as your preferred language.  This is also true of the distance banking app which ties in to your mobile phone and is really quite powerful in terms of the things you can do.  The website can also be viewed in English if required and again, you can do most operations from the website.  Only a few things you need to visit the branch for - order / pick up cards, set up distance banking.

Need only your passport to open a non-residents account.  I’ve been with Sabadell since 2014 and in that time have paid no fees whatsoever for anything.

Thanks for the reply and suggestion. I will check them out although I was hoping to not have to meet a minimum monthly deposit, but if absolutely necessary, I could probably do so.

Thanks again.

I think you’ll find any bank here that offers a fee-free account will require minimum monthly deposit unfortunately.

I also recommend Sabadell. We began last March with a non residents account and migrated later to a residents account with no fuss.

Sabadell at Vera is horrible,I used to bank there as I bought my place through Solvia which is part of their empire. Wanted a loan to buy a bigger place, they said no problem and then messed me about for months without ever getting anywhere.Always long queues with just one cashier etc...In the end got so fed up with them that I withdrew all my money and shutdown the account. Were they concerned or bothered?,not at all....Could not recommend them at all.Banks are a nightmare to deal with in Espana...

And yet completely different from my experience ..... like I said, been with them since 2014 and they have been fabulous to deal with. Oh well.

But to assist the original poster, what bank in Spain would you recommend then? For a completely fee-free account?

I can only echo Dario’s view. I have banked with Sabadell in Barcelona for ten years and now for the last twelve months in Vera and Mojacar. In all cases been excellent service. We have had several mortgages with them and they have been very supportive throughout the process each time. Only minor niggle is that it does tend to be a bit slow in the branch on occasions. My partner has an account at Santander and believe me they are much slower!

With regard to minimum deposits I do not have direct experience as we have monthly credits above Eur700 per month. Other  posters have advised that provided the total mount credited in the account is Eur700 or more then there are no fees. It seems that you could pay in then withdraw say Eur100 seven times per month and satisfy the requirement - although but of a pain to do so.

Clearly everybody’s experiences are different I have had absolutely no issues with Sabadell and would recommend them.

We opened our bank account with Santander in Garrucha 12 years ago.  Absolutely fantastic, nothing is too much trouble, easy account to manage online.  All direct debits set up for water and electricity - the Manager there is great too!   They speak enough English to help and I speak enough Spanish for them.  We have to pay 600E per month to keep the account free with no charges etc.  We transfer the money via our UK bank account and never had any problems.  Highly recommend Santander in Garrucha!
