We have just bought an apartment and the furniture is of the dated dark wood variety. It's very strongly made so rather than replace it with flimsy stuff we wondered how much it would cost to rub down and paint.

Very easy to do yourself.  Clean with sugar soap, sand or just do a light sanding just to 'key' it, clean again with sugar soap, wait until throughly dry, then paint it with chalk paint, try and get a UK or Swedish brand, the Spanish brand is rubbish. probably take 2 coats, but dry very quickly.  Have fun

As Jenni has said, easy enough to do it yourself but we prefer a satin paint which is available from any of the decorating shops and there are hundreds of colours to choose from. We find it gives a smoother finish and it doesn't need waxing or a varnish top coat but will probably need the same preparation and 2 coats to give good coverage.

Regards,

Paul.

Hi Pah,

Does the satin stay put????? I tried it years ago and after a while its started to flake, of course it could have been my bad preparation, can you remember what brand you used, please.

I did this many years ago using a first coat of pva, water and a little bit of paint just to show which bits you missed.  The two top coats of satin paint stayed put for more than 20 years.  I am sure this is due to the pva base.
