Hi everyone

Just starting the process of applying for a non-lucrative visa.

I have been told that my application is likely to be rejected because I have type 2 diabetes which is likely to cause problems fir the Spanish health service in the future.  I intend to take out private medical insurance.

Please advise

Cheers

John

That puzzles me as I would have thought that private insurance would exclude cover of all preexisting health issues and problems arising from such, whereas the  Spanish Health Service gives excellent attention to diabetics both type 1 and 2.  My husband had his cataracts operated on the health service, very sucessfully and has specific checks on his eyes and feet at regular intervals and 6 monthly blood and urine analysis.  He also  is a type 2 and has not yet needed to inject insulin as he is still able to keep his diabetes under control with prescribed medicine, diet and exercise and he's in his 70s.

I think the point is, that since Bretix came in the rules are now very tight, Spain doesn't want anyone  entering their country that cannot support themselves and their own health care. I also have diabetes but have been here years, so in the systems, but for them to take on new people with health problems is a no no. Mind you in 20 years time, when all us oldies have kicked the bucket, and there are very few English people left here, because Spain refused them a visa,  then Spain might just think again. Because they wont fair well without our money.

I hate to contradict you Jenni, but Spain will fare just fine without the money from British migrants.  We are not the spending powerhouse we fondly imagine ourselves to be, nor do we prop up the Spanish economy.  We actually form a very tiny fraction of Spains GDP; if not Brits it’ll be French, or Belgians or Germans or South Americans - more likely Morrocans or Romanians though as they already outnumber us around 4 to 1

We agree to differ.

Hi Morty1562,

We came here last year on a NLV. I have occasional Heart issues and also suffer with Rheumatoid Arthritis. ASSSA health insurance would not cover these condition’s for the insurance, however we were still granted our Visa and TIE card which we are presently renewing. I’ve found the cost of my medication good compared to the UK and have no problems with the Doctor here renewing my prescription although I do have to pay for the consultation for the conditions which over the last 12 months has been twice. I’m afraid it’s the price I have to pay for wanting to live here. Good luck to you.

Both I and my husband are type 2 diabetics (controlled by meds) and we found that DKV health insurance would cover us for our NLV application. We are in our first year living here and as yet we have not seen a doctor so can’t comment about doctors yet.
